Discover Elsinore by Hire Car
When Elsinore is mentioned, most people first think of the ferry connection to Helsingborg in Sweden. In fact, the neighbouring country is within sight.
Unfairly, however, Elsinore is regarded as a transit station. Because the city offers itself as a starting point for excursions into the surrounding area, the charming northern Denmark.
Exploring the surroundings of Elsinore
A hire car is the ideal way to get around: it’s the best way to find sleepy fishing villages, charming sandy beaches or secluded nature and explore them on your own.
The famous Danish “hyggelighet” (cosiness), which complements the holiday mood so perfectly, casts a spell over every holidaymaker.
Sights in Elsinore
Helsingör is famous for Kronborg Castle, which is right at the entrance to the Öresund.
Although it’s so lovely in the sun, it’s a good place to share Shakespeare’s idea of Hamlet philosophizing about being and not being in the face of wind and waves. The Renaissance castle now houses the Museum of Trade and Navigation.
Marienlyst Castle is also one of Elsinore’s highlights. In addition to its architecture, paintings and silver artworks can be admired. City history is on display at the Bymuseum in the Karmeliterhus (1516); the Wine Museum (Vinmuseum) is housed in a palace cellar that evokes a very special atmosphere.
For those who like things more technical, 'Danmarks Tekniske Museum' is well worth a visit: Inventions of all kinds, steam engines, cars, airplanes and various electrical equipment find an exhibition space here.
After so many sights, a detour to the pretty harbour or one of the nearby beaches is a delightful change. Pölser (sausages) or fresh fish make good snacks.
